Movement Joints - Location

BS 5385: Part 1 1995 Section 3 Design Clause 3.5 Movement Joints 3.5.2 Location

In detailing the location of movement joints in tiling the designer will normally specify they are positioned in the following locations ……(b) where tiling abuts other materials ……(e) where stresses are likely to be concentrated, for example at changes of alignment.

BS 5385 : Part 4 : 1992 Section 2 Clause 6 Damp and Wet Conditions 6.3
In installations where contact with water is only intermittent, and the installation has an opportunity to dry out between periods of use, e.g. in domestic showers, the following points should be noted.

.....(d) Movement joints may be required and should be considered at design stage. (e) Special attention should be paid to sealing the gaps between wall and base, particularly where the installation is located on a suspended floor.

Comment: It is clear from the British Standards guidelines that tiles terminating and abutting a bath or shower tray ledge in a typical domestic shower is a Movement Joint
